“Killing Me Softly With His Song” Fugees | Busted Keys Remix

INSPIRING MOMENT
I’d talked on the phone with the co-writer Norman Gimbel at work, and he turned out to be one of the most courteous “celebrities” with whom I’d ever spoken!

EXTENDING THE MOMENT
This is my very first music video created with my first ever purchased Apple product, a MacBook and all the neat little apps that came with it. To make it special I had to choose from my memory’s playlist a song that gave me a strong impression as well as having had a lasting effect on me.

Growing up into the 90’s hip-hop was without a doubt coming into its own off the backs of Run DMC, De La Soul, Grandmaster Flash, Black Sheep, and countless others who I should probably be crediting. However hip-hop was fighting for acceptance into the mainstream and intellect as well as the soul were the chosen means to de-street the cred as it were.

The Fugees broke ground by earning a Grammy in 1997 for the song, by fighting off critics who had wanted to label the group as an alternative hip-hop act, and brought a fundamental recognition of hip-hop rooted in rap, funk, jazz, r&b, and soul–the latter three having paid homage to Roberta Flack’s vocal styling in her recording of the song in 1973.

“Ready Or Not” was another single released in the Fugees’ album The Score (1996). And “The Dream”…

FACTOIDS
+ inspired by Lori Lieberman’s response to having seen a performance by Don McLean.
+ covered by Roberta Flack (1973).
+ won Grammy for Song Of The Year (1973).
+ Charles Fox is credited as composer and conductor of the instrumental version used as the main musical theme to the film The Drowning Pool (1975) starring Paul Newman.
+ covered by The Fugees (1996).
+ The Fugees’ version was “deleted” from being supplied to retailers due to overwhelming popularity in the US and UK to focus on their follow-up single “Ready Or Not.”
