About Me

WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?
To begin with why I’m starting all this is best described backwards by how it all ended.

One day in June 2003 God told me to quit.

That day I cried, and cried, and cried…and I cried some more. Trust me though, I’m not religiously inclined nor am I a bible-beater. Not exactly a granola beatnik either I just believe I’m open to the possibilities and I guess that’s when “the crazies” come flying in.

I recall the months before His call I was at a peak in my pursuits as an artist up for major label distribution with Warner Music Group or Universal Music Group in Asia. Obedience however knew better and took over the control freak side of me, and the approximately $10,000 worth of gear I had accumulated I didn’t sell but gave away. This was in my mind a move of biblical measures beyond any box or explanation skeptics and psychoanalysts could rationalize of me.

Over the past several years though I’ve written and talked about a unique approach (look up “About Interface: Hear Is What You See” here) to serve music in a way that enriches the listening experience but includes your creativity by the masses. No, it’s not socialism but you can call it crowdsourcing if it’s à la mode, the concept was to create something of mutual benefit to all those involved despite my uncertainty of what those benefits would be—ranging from intrinsic feel-good participation to financial returns.

Recently I was Told music would return into my life, and if this approach is a start then my hope is for it to cause a shift in perspective that changes the way we produce and consume recorded art.

Remember I said I had quit? Apparently I had lied and so does God I have come to find, if we’re in some degree a reflection of each other. The terms He likes to use are “test,” “con,” and “modify.” Amidst everything else I had given away, I’ve since kept only my Roland JV-1000 synth workstation—my first serious piece of music gear ever.

As I use it to perform select songs and expound upon my thoughts in this blog, I also wish to kindle meaningful exchanges to help music find its right place. Ideally this site will expand into a niche “voice” and the content created will ultimately facilitate the job of sync experts—people who put music to film, TV, ads, artists, restaurants, clubs, catwalks, elevators, et al.

WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?
I am based in the place that offers the most free music concerts in the whole wide world! Yup, that would be LA—Los Angeles a/k/a Heaven A d/b/a City Of Found Angels o/b/o Los Illustrious!

WHEN OR HOW OFTEN WILL YOU POST NEW BLOGS?
I do have a 9-to-5 and I try to have a life. So I’ll do my best to average around three posts per week and an additional fourth that provides insight into my most recent music video.

I work to record a new music video each weekend!

WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH?
With my love for music I want to know and play with her to the best of my abilities.

As a musician my goal as Busted Keys is to improve my chops. So what better way to do that than to work on covers and mashups of my favorite songs? From there I’d look to make the natural progression into writing and arrangement of original works that will present an exceptional sound I hope will resonate with others.

As an industry insider I find the commercial aspects of music to be fascinating! Not that financial matters are a requirement to intrigue me but the process of how music is made, shared, and appreciated is a geeky research endeavor of mine.

To exemplify that “geekiness” legalese and technical vocabulary involving copyrights and publishing could more than scathe my rants on the evolving music industry. I could wax poetic on music reviews. And I will even tackle psychological and philosophical discourse on sense perception, memory, and imagination. My recordings will eventually have gathered enough data and metadata organized by logical syntax and semantics tags that will ultimately be of service to consumers and businesses for their respective uses. A library of this holy triumvirate—text, sound, and (still and moving) image—will help facilitate this.

See? Told you so.

WHO’S BEHIND THIS CURTAIN?
My government tag is Jay Wang and I wear many hats:

I am a musician, ethnomusicologist, independent music retailer at MobileUnderground, copyright administrator for the almighty Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) at its worldwide headquarters in LA, and now blogger!

I’m also a nice guy and sometimes I take myself a little too seriously. But on occasion you will find a dry or unexpected snark to lighten up the mood.
